To capture light in words
is no easier than
to render it in pigment,
but Monet found a way,
in shimmering deconstructions
of the cathedral at Rouen,
painted at different hours
of the day
over many weeks.
Nearer home, his subjects were
haystacks and trees,
flowers and views,
his own garden
in all seasons and weathers,
year in and year out,
from dawn until dusk;
he painted the light
that makes time visible.
