I have been running past this little tree all winter; it sits at the very edge of a marsh, sheltered and crowded by much taller trees, with its feet in the water or under ice for much of the year, yet it persists proudly and strongly, and it takes on a special beauty under the fresh snow, striated by all of the shadows of neighbouring trunks.
