Mail run designs

The annual Seguin Mail Run takes place on February 18. This event sees teams of huskies and mushers take bags of mail across country and deliver them to the village postmistress here in Rosseau. I had the honour of designing the thank you cards that will be given to the mushers this year, and I based these two drawings on photos of a couple of the dogs who were here last year. Hopefully this year it won't be quite as cold as the -40* Celsius temperatures that we had in 2016.

A wing and a prayer

I'm not the praying type, but the girls have assumed the position, praying to the hydro gods that we retain electricity as the ice storm begins. I've preemptively filled buckets and water bottles to try to stay ahead of the game if we do go dark (and dry, and cold). Winter can suck it.

escapism

It feels like a particularly blue Monday today. It won't-stop-snowing, after non-stop snow for the past 3 days. And tomorrow there is a freezing rain storm on the way. The snow banks are so tall now (about 3 metres/10 feet) that shovelling is a combination of art, engineering and brute strength. I haven't had time to edit photos or do much of anything else I want because work has been so busy. The kid across the street is ripping around on his snowmobile, making a high-pitched buzz that you can even hear from indoors. It absolutely terrifies Arwen, to the point that she is inconsolable. And then every time you look at the news, it's like what the hell is going wrong with the world now? Spring seems so far away.

This photo was taken at St Augustine a couple of years ago. It's one I've had on my mind not simply for the escapism it provides, but also its significance; my dad's ashes were scattered into those waves, and that was my first visit back there since it happened.

February will never, ever be a month that I can like.
