I don't know about everybody else, but some of my days seem to take on themes of their own, when coincidental overlaps randomly occur. Today, for example, seemed to be about animals. In very different ways.
This morning, I read through a facebook post that a friend had commented on. Other than his one comment, I knew none of the others who chimed in on the topic, which was the new Disney live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. The initial poster commented that he and his family would be boycotting the movie because Disney had written in an openly gay secondary character. Many of this person's facebook friends expressed their concurrence with his point of view. The general consensus was that while God loves everybody, homosexuality is a sin, and how dare Disney expose children to it. The absurdity of this point of view was all the more potent given the context: a fairytale world in which the main characters are a woman and a beast. In a romantic relationship. So it's ok for those two to couple up, but not same-sex people to do the same? The hypocrisy and sheer idiocy of these beliefs left me not only astounded, but also really, really sad.
On a much more positive note, this afternoon my social media feed presented me with a 15 minute TED MED talk that took a fascinating perspective on the gulf between physicians and veterinarians, and then went on to explain the many, many interesting parallels between the two fields, ones that are only beginning to be broached. Well worth the view. Link
Here are a couple of my own beasts.
